Borribles live in geographically centred groups, with the action in the first book starting with Battersea Borribles. The landscape of inner city London is the backdrop for the Borribles’ quests. The Borribles trilogy (1976, 1981, 1986) tells the story of the Borribles, homeless children who survive by squatting in unused buildings and stealing food and their epic journeys across London. Using Farah Mendlesohn’s taxonomy of fantasy, this paper seeks to examine how the tropes of a portal-quest fantasy can be applied to The Borribles trilogy, and how this in turn is used to demonstrate how the Borribles become more alienated and excluded from London by adult characters seeking to destroy them and their anarchic way of life.
